  • History

The passenger coaches of Palace on Wheels were actually specially made for the former rulers of the princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of India.

Since the interiors of the coaches were very rich and had an ethnic feel to them therefore the Indian Railways was not using them after independence. Thus the name “Palace on Wheels” (POW) came from the royal and elitist background of the coaches.

An all new POW was introduced from 1984 which had 13 saloons, 2 restaurant and kitchen cars, one bar cum lounge and 4 service cars. Since 1996, a new broad gauge POW is being operated with inter-connected saloons.
